HISTORY NUVOLARI - APRIL

For Tazio Nuvolari, was a month that always carried the taste of absolute challenge. Dusty roads, city circuits, mountains, and European straights: it was here that the “Flying Mantuan” carved out some of his most daring chapters, turning every start into a statement of courage and every finish into a testament of legend.

The April journey begins in the world of two wheels, when in the 1920s Nuvolari tackled Italian circuits with fierce competitive spirit. In 1923 he raced in Perugia, Crema, and Belfiore, a sequence that tells the story of a rider still in the making, yet already capable of asserting himself with disarming natural talent. It was a period when speed was not yet myth, but pure instinct.

But it is in moving to four wheels that April becomes synonymous with legend. In 1929, at the III Coppa delle Mille Miglia, Nuvolari secured one of the first great victories that would change the history of motorsport. It was the emergence of awareness: he was no longer just a talent, but an absolute benchmark on Italian roads.

The following year, in 1930, the IV Coppa delle Mille Miglia definitively confirmed his style: aggressive, unpredictable, intelligent. Every corner was a calculated risk, every straight a challenge to physics. And the public began to understand they were not witnessing a simple race, but the birth of a myth.

1932 brought one of the most iconic moments: the VI Coppa delle Mille Miglia, followed by victory at the Grand Prix de Monaco. It was the peak of Nuvolari’s versatility: from Italy’s dusty roads to Europe’s most technical circuits, his driving remained unmatched, almost instinctive, always a step beyond the limit.

In 1933, April became a double celebration: once again the Mille Miglia and then the prestigious Grand Prix de Monaco. It was the year his fame crossed national borders and became an international legend. There was no rival who did not fear him, no track that did not recognize him as a protagonist.

Even when time seemed to move beyond his prime, Nuvolari continued to deliver extraordinary performances. In 1938, at the Grand Prix de Pau, he proved that class does not fade: still competitive, still fierce, still alive as ever. And after the war, in 1947 at Sanremo, his name remained synonymous with absolute respect.

From 1923 to 1947, in the single month of April, Nuvolari contested more than twenty races across motorcycles and cars, achieving an impressive sequence of podiums and victories spanning three decades of motorsport evolution. But beyond the numbers, what remains is his mark: that of a driver who never raced merely to participate, but always to redefine the limits of what was possible.


April, for Nuvolari, was never just another month. It was the month in which speed learned to become legend.
